Understanding plant-pathogen interactions in Septoria tritici blotch infection of cereals

چکیده
Zymoseptoria is a major fungal pathogen of wheat, responsible for the Septoria Tritici Blotch (STB) disease. Recently, STB has been subject intensive molecular studies. Notably, massive transcriptomic analyses have helped to explore this particular bi-phasic (asymptomatic/necrotrophic) infection process. Cytological also improved our understanding asymptomatic phase. These advances suggest that behaves as hemi-biotrophic fungus, acting like an endophyte during its still difficult control. The emergence fungicide-resistant isolates reduced efficacy many fungicides requiring development novel and methods counteract/reduce fungicide resistance. Likewise, because Stb-resistant wheat cultivars all successively defeated by virulent isolates, there need identify new resistance genes in develop better disease management (pyramiding, mixture/alternation) sustainably control pathogen.

A Gene-for-Gene Relationship Between Wheat and Mycosphaerella graminicola, the Septoria Tritici Blotch Pathogen.
ABSTRACT Specific resistances to isolates of the ascomycete fungus Mycosphaerella graminicola, which causes Septoria tritici blotch of wheat, have been detected in many cultivars. Cvs. Flame and Hereward, which have specific resistance to the isolate IPO323, were crossed with the susceptible cv. Longbow. The results of tests on F1 and F2 progeny indicated that a single semidominant gene control...
متن کاملQuantitative expression analysis of candidate genes for Septoria tritici blotch resistance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
Septoria tritici blotch (STB), caused by the ascomycete fungus Mycosphaerella graminicola (asexual stage: Septoria tritici), is one of the most important foliar diseases of wheat. In this research, quantitative expression analysis of five candidate genes for the induction of resistance to STB (PR-1, Bsi, Msr, Per, and Ppi) was conducted in the wheat cultivars ‘Seri 82’ (susceptible) and ‘Fronta...
متن کاملGenome-Wide Association Study of Septoria tritici Blotch Resistance in Ethiopian Durum Wheat Landraces
Septoria tritici blotch (STB) is a devastating fungal disease affecting durum and bread wheat cultivation worldwide. The identification, development, and employment of resistant wheat genetic material is the key to overcoming costs and limitations of fungicide treatments. The search for resistance sources in untapped genetic material may speed up the deployment of STB genetic resistance in the ...
متن کاملSources of resistance and susceptibility to Septoria tritici blotch of wheat
An association genetics analysis was conducted to investigate the genetics of resistance to Septoria tritici blotch, caused by the fungus Zymoseptoria tritici (alternatively Mycosphaerella graminicola), in cultivars and breeding lines of wheat (Triticum aestivum) used in the UK between 1860 and 2000. The population was tested with Diversity Array Technology (DArT) and simple-sequence repeat (SS...
متن کاملRanking Quantitative Resistance to Septoria tritici Blotch in Elite Wheat Cultivars Using Automated Image Analysis.
Quantitative resistance is likely to be more durable than major gene resistance for controlling Septoria tritici blotch (STB) on wheat. Earlier studies hypothesized that resistance affecting the degree of host damage, as measured by the percentage of leaf area covered by STB lesions, is distinct from resistance that affects pathogen reproduction, as measured by the density of pycnidia produced ...
